Acne or zits is a very broad term to define skin disorders caused due to clogging of the pores of the skin due to accumulation of sebum or oil that causes the skin to erupt to create very small bumps that have been variously described as blackheads, whiteheads, papules or pustules.
Zits or pimples are a milder forms of papules generally called as pimples, a term all of us would be familiar with. Very common among teenagers and young women due to hormonal changes that occur in the body, acne runs through families and increases in intensity through intake of oily substances, stress and friction on skin.
Ayurvedic concept and management of Acne and Zits or Pimples-
Ayurveda refers to acne as Youvanapidaka and also a Mukhadooshika or something that causes damage to the beauty of the face. The skin disorder according to Ayurveda is due to the predominance of vata and pitta doshas due to various factors like hormonal imbalance in adolescents, over indulgences in undesirable food and cosmetics, stress, anxiety, sleeplessness etc. The increase in vata and pitta vitiates the ‘raktha’ or blood and ‘mamsa’ or tissue to produce continuous irritation on the skin of the face, neck and back which leads to acne.
The Ayurvedic method of managing this condition involves purification of blood and body by using herbs with astringent qualities and use of complexion enhancers to enhance the quality of the skin along with herbs that balance the hormonal levels. Various herbs with astringent and anti-bacterial qualities like neem, turmeric, amla, detoxifiers like manjista and khadira, hormonal balancers like shatavari, ashwagandha, ashoka and natural skin enhancers like chandana, rakthachandana and jathiphool are used in Ayurveda to create various preparations or individually to treat these conditions with amazing results. It stresses on the importance of keeping the body well-hydrated and free from anxiety and stress for which it prescribes Yoga or meditation to calm the mind.
